The first person I met was James. James Hello :) [I pass him the portrait] Did you do this?! Me Yeah :D J That's awesome! [Interruption with someone who wanted to talk to him at some point later] J Hello again. Me [Nod hi] :) J [picks it up] What is this? I-- Me That's crochet. J Holy shhh—that's aMAzing! Me I tried to do four of them in the last month, but I overestimated myself and only got three and a half. J [some sounds] Is that hand-done? Me Yes, heh! I've got the half-project if you'd like to see it. J Yeah! Me K. [I pull out the half-Billy, probably mumble something about "this is the hook," and of course I'm shaking with nerves] J I'm STUNNED! That's amazing. I'm stun—my autograph is never gonna be as artful as your thing! [begins signing] That is incredible. /That/ is incredible. That is—that's f-kin incredible. Me :D J [He tells me an anecdote about his experience with bead crafting, and I think finishes signing] Me I don't know if I'd have the patience for beads. J Oh /come ooon!/ Are you kidding me?! If you have patience for this… Me Iono, I'd rather work with spider webs [flap at the portrait] than flies. J [lol!] How long'd that take you? Me Umm...I think I finished it, 8 or 9 days[?] J Fuuh! Me But I was working a job too, otherwise I'd spend the entire day on it. J [chackle] It's relaxing, isn't it? Me …kind of. J Kind of? :) Me Depends on what part of it. J K, yeah. When the colors get mixed up I imagine it's a little bit dicey. Me [flappingly trying to indicate the hair, mumble-stutter about tangling everything] J Yeah. You are amazing! I've never seen anything like that, seriously-- Me I think I'm the only one on Google right now, so… J Yeah! I…I don't know if it'll spread cuz I don't know if anyone else is talented enough. Me Thank youuu! J You're welcome! :) Have a great con! Me [too softly for him to hear] You too! |
Minutes later (not the weeks it took to write this), I met Ted. Ted Hi! What's your name? Nobody! Do you do it with a needle? Me With a crochet hook, it's a really tiny hook. [I pull out the half-Billy again, slightly less shaky this time] T That's crazy. That is just the craziest thing I've ever seen. [down to business] All right. Ahm…you want me to sign this? Me Yes :) T Who am I makin' it out to? Me Stefanie, it's spelled with an F… T You know what, here, [to assistant] hand me a [she passes a sticky note pad] Thank you. Will you write your name down here? Fellow fan She's prepared! :) Me [yes indeed, my backpack had a pen, pencil, and spare Sharpie ready to go :p ] T Right there. Then began the supersonic squeals and barely contained wiggle dances of joy…which, after the train ride became the car ride, turned into audible squeals and visible wiggle dances. |
